The Grand Bazaar
Commissioned by Sultan Mehmed II in 1455 shortly after the conquest of Constantinople, the Grand Bazaar has grown into one of the largest and oldest covered markets on earth — over 4,000 shops along 61 covered streets, drawing as many as 400,000 visitors on a single day. Its scale and organisation by merchant guild have remained essentially unchanged even as the goods on offer evolved over nearly 570 years.
Hamam: Çemberlitaş & Kılıç Ali Paşa
Built in 1584 by the great Ottoman architect Mimar Sinan and commissioned by Nurbanu Sultan, Çemberlitaş Hamamı remains one of the most historically significant bathhouses in the city, its marble-domed interior still in daily use for traditional scrub-and-massage rituals. Sinan also designed Kılıç Ali Paşa Hamamı in the same period for the Ottoman admiral of the same name; a meticulous restoration has turned it into the more polished, exclusivity-minded of the two, with separate sections and a noticeably calmer atmosphere than the bustle of Çemberlitaş.
Day Trips Beyond the City
For travellers with an extra day, a short domestic flight connects Istanbul to Cappadocia's hot-air balloon fields — a genuinely different Anatolian landscape of volcanic valleys and cave dwellings, best combined with an overnight stay rather than attempted as a same-day round trip given the flight time on either end.
Planning Around the Season
Bosphorus cruises and hamam visits run comfortably year-round, though spring and early autumn offer the most pleasant conditions for time on the water. The Grand Bazaar closes on Sundays, worth checking before building a shopping day around it.
