The Acropolis Museum
Opened on 20 June 2009 to a design by Bernard Tschumi with Greek architect Michael Photiadis, the Acropolis Museum was raised on pillars above an active archaeological excavation, with glass flooring throughout that lets visitors see the ancient remains directly beneath their feet. Its top-floor Parthenon Gallery reproduces the temple's exact orientation and column spacing, displaying the surviving Parthenon marbles facing outward exactly as they once stood, across 14,000 square metres holding more than 4,250 objects.
Cape Sounion
Built between 444 and 400 BC under Pericles, the Doric Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion has been the first sight of Athenian territory visible from the sea for 2,500 years, once doubling as a watchtower guarding the harbour and nearby silver mines. Lord Byron carved his name into its stone in the early 1800s, and the temple remains one of the most reliably spectacular sunset viewpoints within a day trip of the city.
The Athens Riviera
South of the city along the coast toward Vouliagmeni, home to the Four Seasons Astir Palace detailed in our hotels guide, the Athens Riviera has drawn an international crowd since the 1960s, when Jackie O, Brigitte Bardot, and Aristotle Onassis made Vouliagmeni's beach clubs a fixture of the Mediterranean social calendar — a reputation the area's private beaches and marina-front dining continue to trade on today.
Day Trips to the Saronic Islands
A short boat ride from Piraeus reaches the car-free island of Hydra and the pistachio groves of Aegina, both manageable as long day trips or paired with an overnight stay for travellers wanting island time without leaving the greater Athens area behind entirely.
Planning Around the Season
The Acropolis Museum and Cape Sounion both run comfortably year-round, though summer heat makes early-morning museum visits and late-afternoon departures for Sounion the more comfortable pattern. The Athens Riviera's beach clubs operate seasonally, generally from late spring through early autumn.
