Best Areas in Zurich: Altstadt, Bahnhofstrasse, Zurich West & Seefeld
Zurich rewards a short attention span more than most cities of its wealth — the medieval old town, the world's most expensive shopping street, a former industrial quarter turned nightlife district, and the calm of the lakeshore all sit within a twenty-minute walk of one another.
Altstadt (Old Town)
Split by the Limmat into two historic halves, Zurich's Altstadt is a tangle of cobbled lanes, guild houses, and church spires that has changed remarkably little in silhouette since the medieval period — even as Widder Hotel and Storchen Zurich, both covered in our hotels guide, have quietly modernised the interiors behind those old façades. It remains the city's sightseeing core by day and one of its more refined dining districts by night.
Bahnhofstrasse & Paradeplatz
Running from the main railway station to the lake, Bahnhofstrasse ranks among the most expensive retail streets in the world, its boutiques underpinned by the private banking vaults said to run beneath the pavement itself. Beyer, Switzerland's oldest watch retailer, has traded from Bahnhofstrasse 31 since 1760 across eight generations of the same family — a rare thread of continuity on a street otherwise dominated by international flagship stores. Zurich West
A former industrial quarter of factories and rail yards, Zurich West has spent the past two decades converting its warehouses into concert venues, design studios, and the electronic clubs detailed in our nightlife guide. It is the district that most contradicts Zurich's buttoned-up financial reputation, and increasingly the one that defines the city's cultural identity to visitors under forty.
Seefeld & the Right Lake Shore
East of the Altstadt, the lakeside promenade takes on a noticeably Mediterranean feel — tree-lined paths, lakeside boutiques, and waterfront dining that runs at a slower pace than the financial core a short walk away. This is the district for a lakeside walk, an outdoor swim at one of the public lidos, or simply watching the boat traffic that connects back to the cruises detailed in our experiences guide.
Zürichberg
Rising above the lake and the old town, Zürichberg is Zurich's most affluent residential hillside — grand villas, forested walking trails, and the Zurich Zoo, all a short climb from the centre. The Dolder Grand, covered in our hotels guide, sits at the top edge of this district, using its elevation for views that no lakeside or old-town address can match.
Matching District to Purpose
Sightseeing and old-world atmosphere point toward the Altstadt; serious shopping and finance-district polish belong on Bahnhofstrasse and Paradeplatz; nightlife and contemporary culture pull toward Zurich West; and travellers wanting calm, greenery, or a lakeside pace should look to Seefeld or Zürichberg.
