Patriarch's Ponds

Free of the grand socialist architecture that defines much of the city, Patriarch's Ponds is a quiet enclave of narrow streets and Art Nouveau mansions once home to novelist Mikhail Bulgakov, whose work is set on these very streets. Today it draws Moscow's artistic and culinary community, with independent restaurants and cafés opening around the pond on a near-constant basis.

Kitay-Gorod

One of Moscow's oldest districts, Kitay-Gorod has kept a rebellious streak despite decades of Soviet modernisation — former mansions and monasteries now house artists and designers, and its origins as a diverse historic marketplace still show in its slightly anarchic, unpolished energy. Zamoskvorechye

It remains one of the most walkable, least touristic districts this close to the centre.

Moscow City

The Moscow International Business Center, known locally as Moscow City, is the newest addition to the skyline — a cluster of glass skyscrapers including the OKO and Mercury City towers, several with observation decks and rooftop restaurants offering the highest views in the city. It represents a genuinely different, thoroughly modern register of Moscow, a sharp contrast to the historic districts elsewhere in this guide.

Visitors drawn to literary history and independent dining should base themselves around Patriarch's Ponds; those chasing nightlife and a rougher creative energy will find it in Kitay-Gorod; a quieter, more residential stay points toward Zamoskvorechye; and travellers wanting the highest views and newest architecture in the city belong in Moscow City.
